This Month’s Topic: Common Botox Questions
As a physician and Medical Director of the Titus Medical Spa, I’m often asked questions about Botox treatments from patients who want to turn back the hands of time by reducing moderate to severe expression lines. If Botox treatments are done properly, the result is a natural, more youthful expression and a smoother, more tranquil facial appearance. I hope the answers given below are helpful, if you are trying to decide if Botox is right for you.
What is Botox and how does it work?
Botox Cosmetic is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium that blocks the release of acetylcholine and causes the muscles to relax. A very small amount of the product is injected into the desired treatment area, through a very thin needle, partially blocking the nerve impulses to the facial muscles. Botox paralyzes the muscles that cause expression lines to form.
Do Botox treatments hurt?
Since the needle used is very thin, (about the size of an acupuncture needle), most patients tolerate the treatments with little discomfort. You should be able to return to work or resume your normal daily life right after a treatment.
How long does a Botox procedure take?
Most treatments can be accomplished within 10-15 minutes. Many patients have the treatment during their lunch hour and can return to work immediately, since there is little or no evidence of having anything done. Occasionally, mild bruising can occur, but can be covered with cosmetics.
How long does Botox last?
For most patients, initial Botox treatments, when used for wrinkles and expression lines, typically last 3 to 6 months. Additional treatments may have more lasting results, sometimes up to a year.
What are the most common side effects associated with Botox treatments?
Since Botox is injected directly into the muscle when used for wrinkles, the most common side effect may be slight bruising. This occurs most commonly when treating crow’s feet, occasionally with treatment of the forehead, and rarely with treatment of the frown lines. There is a remote possibility that drooping of the eyelid can occur, when treating the forehead area. This side effect will wear off over the course of a few months, and can be avoided, if injections are administered properly.
How much does Botox cost per treatment?
The cost varies from doctor to doctor, and can depend on which area(s) are being treated. Some doctors charge according to the amount of Botox used (a per unit cost) and others charge according to the "zone" that’s being treated. The average cost per zone is approximately $250 to $500.00.
