March's Topic: Laser Vein Therapy

Many people develop visible blood vessels on the surface of their skin—from tiny spider veins or “telangiectasias”, to deep blue reticular veins. Several causes for this type of problem range from genetic predisposition, to weak vein walls. Other contributing factors include pregnancy, hormones, lack of exercise, people who are overweight and those who are prone to prolonged sitting or standing. At Titus Medical Spa, we use Cutera’s CoolGlide® Vein Therapy Skin Rejuvenation. Using this and other types of laser therapies can improve these conditions through a series of non-invasive laser treatments that can be used on any part of your face, neck and décolleté. It is safe for all skin tones.

What is laser vein therapy and how does it work?

The type of laser therapy we utilize is a non-invasive laser treatment procedure that uses programmable wavelength settings. This enables your practitioner to tailor your treatment to your individual needs. Cutera’s Vein Therapy delivers a series of laser light pulses to the treatment area, which heat the skin, causes the blood within the vein to coagulate, (eventually destroying the vein), which is absorbed by the body over time. The result is a lightening and eventually, a disappearance of the veins.

What does laser vein treatment feel like?

You may feel a mild pinching or stinging sensation when the pulse of laser light is administered. Pain medication or anesthesia is usually not required and a cooling gel can be applied for your comfort.

How long does a treatment take?

Treatment time depends on the area of the body being treated. However, most treatments should take less than one hour.

What happens after the treatment?

Following your treatment, a slight redness or mild swelling in the treated area may appear, that disappears within less than 24 hours. In some cases, patients may experience bruising, which should heal within one to two weeks without needing any treatment. In rare cases, surface blistering will occur. Treatment of larger veins may result in a tan pigment that may last for several weeks or months. Patients receive leg vein treatment, may want to consider wearing support hose for a short period of time.

How soon will I see results?

Within two to six weeks of treatment, patients will see a significant improvement. It really depends on the severity of your veins. In some cases, results may take several months.

How many treatments will I need?

One or two treatments are usually sufficient to see results. Additional treatments may be recommended, depending on the color, size and number of veins being treated. Three or four treatments may be necessary for the treatment of veins on your legs. If veins reappear after time on the treated area, additional "touchup" treatments can be given.

How much does a laser vein treatment cost?

The cost of a laser vein treatment depends on the size of the area and the severity of the problem. Costs can range from $150-$200 for the first, 15-minute treatment, with follow-up visits ranging from $100-$300.
